Our speaker Ted Handley, a well known and respected local land agent, gave a fascinating one and half hour talk on the history of land use and the grazing auctions on the Pevensey Levels sharing images of some of important characters and old maps and catalogues from the grazing sales.
Ted shared his considerable experience of working with farmers, graziers and land owners on the Pevensey Levels from the 1970s to the modern day, including the grazing sales which he ran from the 70s up until the early 2000’s. His stories of the people and farming practices on the Levels provided our group with vital insight into how this unique wetland landscape (and its incredible wildlife) has survived and continues to thrive to this day.
He also made a passionate case for farmers to continue to graze livestock on the Levels and work more collaboratively on environmental schemes and measures to ensure we safeguard the landscape and its wildlife for generations to come.
