We had an excellent turnout for our fourth winter lecture last Wednesday 15th of January. Matthew Bird, a Chartered Environmentalist and project strategy/delivery lead at Love Our Ouse, spoke about their pioneering community work, which brings people together to celebrate and raise the profile of the River Ouse from its source to the sea.
Matthew’s presentation provided fascinating insights into how their community engagement is facilitated through various events. He also discussed the 2023 motion passed by Lewes District Council to explore applying Rights of Nature to the River Ouse—potentially making it the first river in the UK to gain such legal rights.
I was particularly interested in learning more about their legal structure as a non profit Community Interest Company (CIC) and their strategies for securing funding—something that’s high on our own agenda as we consider how to move forward beyond this year. For those who were unable to attend, you can watch a recording of Matthew’s presentation on YouTube here
