We began our session with a brief recap of our current objectives under the Pevensey Levels Facilitation Fund, noting that the existing funding concludes this year. We also outlined plans to secure new core funding, aiming to establish a Pevensey Farmers Community Interest Company (CIC). Following this, Christine Meadows provided valuable insights in a short talk highlighting the importance of developing a robust pipeline of investable projects.
Members then gathered around a large A0 colour map of the Pevensey Levels to spark discussion and generate ideas for the next phase of our cluster group activities.
Participants were invited to share their suggestions under three key headings:
- Habitat Restoration Ideas: Notable suggestions included creating additional reed beds to attract Bittern, meadow restoration, scrape creation, and conducting baseline environmental DNA (eDNA) studies to better understand current species distribution.
- Species Reintroductions: Members proposed the reintroduction of water voles, with consideration also given to beavers.
- Invasive Species Management: Participants highlighted pennywort, mink (management already underway), mare’s tail, and water soldier as invasive concerns. Enhanced predator control efforts were also suggested.
The reflections on the cluster group were overwhelmingly positive, noting benefits such as:
- Engaging and diverse guest speakers
- Opportunities to connect and network with neighbours
- A supportive space for idea sharing and inquiry
- Informative farm visits and practical workshops
