We had a good turnout for our fifth winter lecture on Wednesday 12th of February. Revai Kinsella, Area Manager from the Pevensey and Cuckmere Water Level Management Board (WLMB) came to update our members on the progress and plans for the future of the Pevensey WLMB.
Revai came and spoke to our group two years ago, outlining some of the challenges including climate changes and the ageing infrastructure – with several of the locks completely broken or leaking. Since then Revai said they have worked hard to build better working relationships with the Environment Agency and Natural England.
A key part of this has been gathering evidence, via Hydraulic modelling to better understand how water flows, which has helped them optimise the sizing of their pumps.
Future plans include replacement of all eight existing pumps, better water level management, improved compliance with regulations and improved efficiency. To this end Revai explained they had successful applied for funding via Storm Recovery Fund – Tranche 2 (which wasn’t confirmed until end of November 24) with a condition that all work to be completed by 31st of March 2025.
Due to the short timespan and limited weather window, this may mean that some of the works including, a number of Tilting Weirs may not get completed in time. Revai is also still awaiting a funding decisions on Drockmill Pumping Station (they already have a design) but is hopeful this can be completed in less than 12 months once they receive the greenlight.
