BREEDING REDSHANK
A Redshank piping from the top of a gate post was once a familiar sight on the levels. They like to call from vantage points like this in their breeding locations and when they do identification is easy. Long orange legs and bill make them unmistakeable. On the ground their speckled grey-brown plumage can be hard to spot. They need wetter areas such as flooded scrapes and wide, wet ditch edges where they can probe soft mud for invertebrates. They used to breed reliably in the small areas of saltmarsh at the coast and locally over the whole of the Levels. Tussocky vegetation hides their nests. Redshank numbers have crashed and they are now barely hanging on. As with Lapwing on Pevensey Levels we have an unrivalled opportunity to get them back in numbers.
